REMOTE SALES HIRING INDEX 2026
Who is actually hiring remote sales talent in 2026, which roles are in demand, what hiring managers screen for, and how long it takes to land a first offer.
Published 31 July 2026 · 12 min read

Earnings data tells you what remote sales pays. It does not tell you whether anyone is hiring. This index answers the demand-side question: which remote sales roles are actually open in 2026, which industries are opening them, what hiring managers screen for, and how long it realistically takes to go from first application to first offer.
We classified postings by what the role does rather than what it is called, because the market uses remote closer, high-ticket closer, remote salesperson, account executive, SDR, BDR and appointment setter interchangeably — and they are not the same job.
41%
Remote closer, high-ticket closer and account executive postings combined, as a share of all remote sales roles tracked.
34 days
Measured across candidates who applied to five or more roles with a call recording attached.
62%
The rest offer a base retainer plus commission, most commonly in SaaS and UK-based employers.
3.1%
Roughly one offer for every 32 applications submitted without a referral or recorded call.
Definitions
THE JOB TITLES, TRANSLATED.
Remote closer / high-ticket closer
A salesperson who closes $4k–$25k offers over video calls, usually on commission. Also advertised as high-ticket salesperson, sales closer or 1-call closer.
Account executive (AE)
An in-house closing role, typically B2B or SaaS, with a base salary, a quota and a 50/50 base-to-variable split. Sometimes called a sales executive or B2B salesperson.
SDR / BDR
Sales development representative or business development representative. Outbound roles that qualify prospects and book meetings for closers rather than closing themselves.
Appointment setter
The creator-economy version of an SDR. Works inbound DMs and lead lists to book calls onto a closer's calendar, usually paid per booking plus a small closing bonus.
Demand index
A 0–100 score comparing how heavily each role is being hired for, normalised against the highest-demand role in the dataset.
Time-to-offer
Days between a candidate's first application in a search and their first written offer, measured per candidate rather than per application.

Remote closer / high-ticket closer
27% of postings · 78% commission-only
Also called: high-ticket salesperson, sales closer, 1-call closer · Entry-friendly: Medium
The single largest category of remote sales hiring outside of traditional B2B. Almost always sells a $4k–$25k offer over Zoom for a coaching, consulting, agency or education business.
Account executive (AE)
22% of postings · 6% commission-only
Also called: sales executive, full-cycle AE, B2B salesperson · Entry-friendly: Low
Structured company roles with base salary, quota and a 50/50 pay split. Highest barrier to entry — most postings ask for 1–3 years of closing experience or documented quota attainment.
SDR / BDR
20% of postings · 9% commission-only
Also called: sales development rep, business development rep, outbound rep · Entry-friendly: High
Books qualified meetings rather than closing them. The most common documented entry point into remote sales and the fastest route to a first paid role.
Appointment setter
18% of postings · 83% commission-only
Also called: DM setter, triage rep, qualifier · Entry-friendly: High
The creator-economy equivalent of an SDR. Low barrier, low pay per booking, but the standard proving ground before being promoted onto the phones as a closer.
Sales manager / closer lead
8% of postings · 21% commission-only
Also called: head of sales, sales team lead, player-coach · Entry-friendly: Low
Overrides on team production plus a personal quota. Usually filled internally by promoting the top-performing closer rather than hired externally.
Inside sales / customer-facing hybrid
5% of postings · 12% commission-only
Also called: inside sales rep, renewals rep, account manager · Entry-friendly: Medium
Mixed closing and retention work. Steadier income, lower commission ceiling, most common in SaaS and subscription businesses.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coaching & consulting | 29% | 81% | 19% | $5k–$15k |
| Agency & done-for-you services | 19% | 64% | 36% | $3k–$10k/mo retainer |
| B2B SaaS & tech | 17% | 4% | 96% | $12k–$60k ACV |
| Health, fitness & wellness | 12% | 88% | 12% | $4k–$12k |
| Finance, property & investing | 11% | 59% | 41% | $8k–$40k |
| E-commerce & product | 7% | 46% | 54% | $2k–$8k |
| Education & certification | 5% | 73% | 27% | $4k–$20k |
| Industry | Postings | Typical ticket | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coaching & consulting | 29% | $5k–$15k | The deepest pool of remote closing roles. High lead volume, fast hiring cycles, and the most variable offer quality — vetting the operator matters more than the commission percentage. |
| Agency & done-for-you services | 19% | $3k–$10k/mo retainer | Retainer-based deals mean recurring commission for closers who negotiate a trailing percentage. Longer sales cycles and more decision-makers than coaching. |
| B2B SaaS & tech | 17% | $12k–$60k ACV | Nearly always base plus commission. Hardest to break into without prior AE or SDR experience, but the most stable income and the clearest career ladder. |
| Health, fitness & wellness | 12% | $4k–$12k | Very high call volume and strong emotional buying motivation. Shorter sales cycles, lower average ticket, higher refund exposure. |
| Finance, property & investing | 11% | $8k–$40k | The highest ticket sizes in the creator-adjacent market, with correspondingly heavier compliance requirements and longer decision cycles. |
| E-commerce & product | 7% | $2k–$8k | Smaller tickets and thinner margins. Usually hires setters and hybrid inside sales reps rather than dedicated high-ticket closers. |
| Education & certification | 5% | $4k–$20k | Cohort-based launches create hiring spikes. Work is seasonal but intense, and top performers get re-hired for every cohort. |
What gets you screened in
WHAT HIRING MANAGERS ACTUALLY LOOK AT.
Screening weight by signal
Relative importance placed on each candidate signal by operators hiring remote closers, AEs, SDRs and setters. 0–100.
Source: BackPack Closers Research, 2026
| Signal | Weight | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| A recorded sales call | 92 | The single strongest signal. Hiring managers would rather hear ten minutes of you handling an objection than read a CV. |
| Documented close rate or revenue closed | 81 | A specific number beats an adjective. '28% close rate on 140 qualified calls' outperforms 'proven top closer' every time. |
| Niche or offer-type experience | 68 | Having sold a comparable offer at a comparable price point shortens ramp time, which is what the hiring manager is really buying. |
| CRM and tooling literacy | 61 | GoHighLevel, HubSpot, Close, Salesforce and basic pipeline hygiene. Increasingly, AI note-taking and call-review tools too. |
| Tenure and stability | 54 | Three roles in twelve months reads as a churn risk regardless of results. Twelve months in one seat is a competitive advantage. |
| Timezone and availability overlap | 47 | Most operators want live coverage during their prospects' business hours. Flexible availability materially widens your options. |
| Formal training or certification | 29 | Helps most for candidates with no track record. Once you have recorded calls and numbers, it becomes a supporting signal rather than a deciding one. |

Application to offer
THE HIRING FUNNEL, HONESTLY.
Remote sales application-to-offer funnel
Percentage of applications reaching each stage. Baseline is 100 applications submitted.
Source: BackPack Closers Research, 2026
| Stage | % of applications | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Applications submitted | 100% | Baseline. Most candidates stop here and wonder why nothing happens. |
| Application reviewed by a human | 44% | Roughly half are filtered by an automated form or never opened. |
| Reply or screening message | 22% | Attaching a recorded call roughly doubles this stage. |
| First interview / discovery | 14% | Usually a 20-minute culture-and-motivation call. |
| Role-play or live assessment | 8% | The real filter. Most rejections happen here, not at CV stage. |
| Offer extended | 3.1% | About one offer per 32 applications without a referral. |
Median days to first offer by candidate profile
Days between a candidate's first application and their first written offer.
Source: BackPack Closers Research, 2026
| Candidate profile | Median days to offer |
|---|---|
| With a recorded call + referral | 14 |
| With a recorded call, no referral | 27 |
| CV only, some sales experience | 48 |
| Career changer, no sales experience | 76 |
The lever is proof, not volume. Doubling your application count moves the offer date by days. Attaching a recorded call moves it by weeks. The candidates who get hired fastest are not applying more — they are applying with evidence.
Why applicants get rejected
FIVE REASONS THE OFFER NEVER COMES.
Share of rejections by stated reason
Reasons given by operators when declining remote closer, AE, SDR and setter applicants.
Source: BackPack Closers Research, 2026
| Reason | Share of rejections | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| No proof of performance | 34% | No call recording, no numbers, no pipeline evidence. The applicant asks to be believed rather than showing the work. |
| Failed the live role-play | 26% | Talks over the prospect, pitches before diagnosing, or folds at the first price objection. |
| Wrong offer fit | 17% | A $2k product closer applying for a $25k advisory offer. The mechanics of the conversation are different. |
| Availability mismatch | 12% | Cannot cover the hours the leads come in. Common for UK candidates applying to US operators. |
| Poor written communication | 11% | The application itself is the first sales asset. Sloppy writing predicts sloppy follow-up. |

Methodology
- 1We tracked publicly advertised remote sales roles — remote closer, high-ticket closer, account executive, SDR, BDR, appointment setter and sales manager — across mainstream job boards, creator-economy hiring communities, and direct operator postings between January and July 2026.
- 2Postings were classified by role type and vertical using the responsibilities described, not the job title, because titles are used inconsistently across the market. A posting titled 'sales rep' that books meetings without closing was classified as SDR.
- 3Demand index is a 0–100 score normalised against the highest-demand role, weighted by share of postings, repeat postings from the same employer, and time a role stayed open.
- 4Funnel and time-to-offer figures are derived from candidate outcomes reported to BackPack Closers by applicants who tracked their own application history, supplemented by hiring feedback from operators we place closers with.
- 5Compensation structure percentages reflect how the role was advertised. Some commission-only roles later negotiate a retainer, so the true share of base-paying roles is likely a few points higher.
- 6This index measures demand and hiring behaviour. For pay levels, see the companion Remote Sales Earnings Report 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Which remote sales role is easiest to get hired for with no experience?
Appointment setter and SDR/BDR roles. Both are advertised as entry-friendly, both are judged on work ethic and coachability more than track record, and both produce the recorded conversations you need to apply for closing roles later. Around 38% of the postings we tracked in those two categories explicitly stated that no prior sales experience was required.
How long does it take to get a remote closing job?
The median time from first application to first offer is 34 days. Candidates who attach a recorded sales call and have a referral reach an offer in a median of 14 days. Career changers with no sales experience and no recording take a median of 76 days.
Are remote closer jobs commission-only?
Most are. 62% of the remote closing roles we tracked were advertised as commission-only, rising to 78% for high-ticket closer roles in the coaching and consulting space. Account executive roles in B2B SaaS are the opposite: 96% include a base salary.
What is the difference between a remote closer, an account executive, an SDR and an appointment setter?
An appointment setter or SDR/BDR books qualified meetings but does not close them. A remote closer or high-ticket closer takes those meetings and closes the sale, usually on commission for a $4k–$25k offer. An account executive is the in-house equivalent inside a company, with a base salary, a quota and a formal territory. The skills overlap; the pay structures and hiring bars do not.
What do hiring managers actually look at first?
A recorded sales call. It scored 92 out of 100 on our screening-weight index — higher than close-rate claims, niche experience, CRM literacy or certifications. If you have no recording, record a role-play. A staged call with real objection handling outperforms no call.
